Server not found in Domino Directory

When working on some new partitioned servers today, I saw this on the console of all three servers.

06/18/2008 04:41:03 PM Router: Connection from server NOTESVN1/DOMAIN not used; Server not found in Domino Directory.

I couldn’t quite figure it out because the 3 partitioned servers I was building/working on had nothing to do with this new cluster that another team member had just built for our Vietnam office. Read the rest of this entry »

When to delete the local mail.box

We were getting a few strange sounding reports from a user who was trying to send email to 3 groups.

The first message was:
“A copy of this message was sent to 180 recipient(s), but the Internet format of this message was not sent to the following 34 recipient(s); , etc.”

The second message was:
“Document has invalid structure: mail.box”

We closed the client, deleted mail.box, opened the client, and let it re-create mail.box and all was fine.

How databases can suddenly dissapear

We had this case recently where a mailbox just disappeared. Upon further investigation, we found something like this in the logs:

05/12/2008 05:06:38 PM Compaction failed: Unable to bring e:\Lotus\Domino\Data\mail\someuser.nsf back online.: File does not exist
05/12/2008 05:06:38 PM Compaction failed: Unable to rename e:\Lotus\Domino\Data\mail\someuser6.TMP back to e:\Lotus\Domino\Data\mail\someuser.nsf: File is in use by another program – You must rename it yourself.

Then we found this IBM technote:

http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21139606

which is entitled “Databases Are Left with .TMP Extensions After Running Compact -c or -L”

After looking in the temp folder, we found the database and were able to rename the filename.

We suspect that the cause is a backup program which coincidentally is running on this database or the temp file at the same time that compact is running.

Web SSO woes

We are about to implement a webmail server in a remote site. This site has a newly installed mail server cluster. One on the LAN and one in the DMZ to serve webmail/Internet replication.

I had previously setup the Web SSO fields in the server document for the machine that is sitting out in the DMZ. I added the server name to the Web SSO for LptaToken document. We already have this in place in a couple of locations, so we’ve proved the concept and know it works.

I placed the domlog.nsf database that I wanted on the server.

Once all that was in place, I tried accessing the server’s URL successfully directly and logged into a test mailbox without problem.

Now time to test the Web SSO. Read the rest of this entry »

Folder is larger than supported

Today,

I received an email/phone call/IM about a super-VIP user who’s mailbox in South America had a problem.

This user travels frequently, has a 23GB mailbox, and refuses to carry a laptop. He travels from his Swiss office to Hong Kong, Singapore, and South America.

When he arrives in Argentina, he expects his replica to be up-to-date without problems. The issue is that the database is 23GB and the comm links to Argentina are very slow, so sometimes, replication delay can be up to 2 or 4 hours.

What I suggested that we do is to create his mailbox on the clustered servers in Argentina and then get the Swiss and Argetina local IT staff to coordinate with us every time he is going to travel so that we can change his home mail server. This will mean that mail will not need to replicate to the Argentina server from Switzerland, through the hubs in Hong Kong before he will receive it in his Inbox. Read the rest of this entry »
