Funny Microsoft phrase – what’s the real name of the next server?

I received this in a Microsoft (not business partner) email invitation to a Microsoft IT Professional Seminar Series

On the agenda was – “Windows Server® 2008 R2 (Codename ‘Windows Server 7′)”

No system temp, no remote console

Today, I built a new server on a machine with Virtual PC. I’m testing an R6.5.6 to R7 upgrade plan.

This was the first time that I have used Virtual PC. It seemed to work pretty well, except that the mouse scrolling was horribly slow compared to it’s host machine. Perhaps, I should be access the virtual PC with RDP instead of it’s correlating host.

I got the server installed, setup, and put the finishing touches on the servers document. I tried to access the server with a client, no problem, then the admin client. Suddenly, my admin client locks up. Read the rest of this entry »

HP Systems Insight Management – who uses it?

I just want to mention that I love HP (and previously Compaq) servers. I love installing Windows 2003 with a Smart Start DVD and all of the HP Insight Management agents, the Windows drivers for the various systems components being installed when it’s all said and done.

I’ve been playing with the HP Systems Insight Management Console for the last few months. It’s a great tool and lots and lots of granular monitoring, patch and firmware deployment, etc.

I just realized this week that you could go to HP’s website and install what’s called a Proliant Support Pack.

Domino 6.5.x upgrade notes

This weekend, I’ve upgraded 30+ servers in 10 countries. It’s been an all weekend affair, and I spent a pretty good time organizing myself last week.

First, most of our servers were 6.5.6FP2, and we wanted to apply FP3, the DWA for Windows Vista java hotfix, and 6.5.6 FP3 HF29 which fixes the Out of Office agent (OOO is enabled even after user disables it).
We had 4 servers that were 6.5.4, 6.5.5, and 6.5.4FP2. These servers were the only servers that really gave me any problem.
I also wanted to upgrade TrendMicro OfficeScan from 2.6 to 3.0 (only about 4 servers needed this).

I only ran into a couple of gotchas. Here’s how I did it. Read the rest of this entry »

how to kill hung Domino processes

On all of my Domino servers, I load some of the Windows NT, 2000, or 2003 Resource Kit Utilities. See Microsoft KB article 927229 for the Windows 2000 Resource Kit Tools download page (You can download them individually and they’re free).

Here is the link to the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools

The individual tools I use are:
Kill.exe
now.exe
Sclist.exe
sleep.exe
srvinfo.exe
Timeout.exe
TLIST.EXE
WNTIPCFG.EXE (does not work on Windows 2003 unfortunately)

I put them into the c:\program files\rktools\ directory, which is the default if you install the whole package. I also put that directory into the path so that you can execute any of the commands from any directory or any script/batch file. Read the rest of this entry »
