Getting the Delicious bookmarks add-on to work with Firefox 4.0

I figured out a simple trick to make the Delicious bookmarks Firefox add-on work after upgrading to Firefox 4.0 or 4.0.1.

This assumes that you previously had the Delicious bookmarks add-on working in Firefox 3.6.x and you have just upgraded to Firefox 4.0 – which disables the add-on and states that it is incompatible with Firefox 4.0

  • Open Firefox
  • Goto “Help” in the Menu, then “Troubleshooting Information”
  • Click on the “Open Containing Folder” button (within the box “Application Basics” on top of the page)
  • Close Firefox
  • Goto into directory “extensions\{2fa4ed95-0317-4c6a-a74c-5f3e3912c1f9}”
  • Edit install.rdf and change the following from the first line to the second line
  • em:maxVersion="4.0b3pre" />
    em:maxVersion="4.0" />
  • Restart Firefox

UPDATE: To get the Delicious bookmarks add-on to work with Firefox 4.0.1 and all subsequent 4.0.x versions, change above line to:

  • em:maxVersion=”4.0.*" />

Very nice work David. You need to get this over to Delicious, where I imagine many people have been looking for help. Good job.

After I finally figured out how to “edit”, it worked great – Thanks. Delicious said “Unfortunately, the Delicious add-on is not currently available for
Firefox 4 and we do not yet have any estimate to when an updated version
will be available. I apologize for any disappointment this may cause.

  • Thanks a lot! I just bookmarked your page on Delicious using Firefox 4 :)

Wait–it’s not working for me (yet). I have a Mac–does that matter? I had Delicious working in Firefox 3.6. I installed Firefox 4. I went to “Help” and then “Troubleshooting. . .”I didn’t see a link for “Open Containing Folder,” but there was a list of add-ons showing that Delicious was not enabled. The Delicious line showed the directory “extensions\{2fa4ed95-0317-4c6a-a74c-5f3e3912c1f9}”
But when I close Firefox, of course, that page disappears. HOW DO I OPEN THE DIRECTORY EXTENSIONS AFTER CLOSING FIREFOX? I think if I get this information I can make it work. Please let me know how.

  • Goodwin Deacon says:

Does this work on a Mac? I can’t figure out how to get to the directory “extensions/ . . .” after closing Firefox.

  • david says:

I was able to get this to work on both Ubuntu 10.04 and Mac OS X 10.6.6

Perhaps, you can use Mac OS X’s Spotlight to search for this folder after you have closed your Firefox.

If you are using Firefox 4.0.1 you need to change the text to: em:maxVersion=”4.0.1″
    Works fine :)
