The ease and benefit of setting up diagnostics collection and LND Fault Reports database

I setup the diagnostics collection and Lotus Notes/Domino Fault reports database for the first time today. It only took about 15 minutes.

I created a new database called Lotus Notes/Domino Fault Reports (faultreport.nsf) from the lndfr.ntf template. I set this up on a central server that also use as my main monitoring server, which initiates mail probes to all servers. Then I created a mail-in database document for this database with the name Lotus Notes/Domino Fault Reports.

I then edited the * Server configuration document and set the diagnostics tab with the following settings:

This basically tells all servers to send their diagnostics to the mail-in database.

I then edited the server configuration document for the server that houses the Lotus Notes/Domino Fault Report database and set the diagnostics tab with the following settings:

This tells my monitoring server to run the Fault Analyzer task and check the mail-in database for new diagnostic data and delete attachments for duplicates (to save space).

Last, I edited my main Desktop Policy settings document with the following settings:

These policy settings set the client so that they will mail any diagnostics information after a crash to the mail-in database silently after the client has restarted.

I set this up yesterday afternoon, and when I came into work this afternoon, I already had 15 different documents indicated Notes client crashes. I haven’t had a server crash/restart yet to ensure that it is also working for the servers, but it certainly appears to be working for the clients.

JYR suggested that I create two seperate mail-in databases, one for the server and one for the clients to ease in searching through them. Over time, apparently, the clients send in quite a large amount of diagnostics information.

By the way, I just found these two blog post links regarding the matter:
Chris Whisonant’s – Domino 7 Fault Analyzer Task
Susan Bulloch – Are you using Automatic Diagnostic Collection?
